Lady Spartans Drop Heartbreaker to Hoover, 7–6

Boardman suffered its second consecutive loss Monday evening, falling to North Canton Hoover, 7–6. It marks the first time in over two years the Spartans have dropped back-to-back contests.

Costly errors proved to be the difference, as Boardman struggled to maintain momentum throughout the game.

Hoover struck first, plating three runs in the top of the third inning. After loading the bases, the Vikings capitalized with a walk to force in one run, followed by a two-run single to take a 3–0 lead.

As they have all season, the Spartans responded. In the bottom half of the inning, Lanie Joyce reached on an error and moved to second on a throwing mistake. Ellie Wymer followed with a walk—her team-leading 12th of the season—before Addie Rudge reached on another error to load the bases. Jocelynn Torres then drew a walk to bring in a run, and Kate Thames delivered a clutch single up the middle to score two more, tying the game at 3–3.

Hoover regained the lead in the fourth with a run on a single and a double, but Boardman answered again. Back-to-back walks by Gabi Sferra and Joyce set the table, and Rudge came through with an RBI single to even the score at 4–4.

The Vikings took a 5–4 lead in the fifth, capitalizing with two outs after a walk and an error extended the inning. Boardman was unable to respond in the frame.

After holding Hoover scoreless in the sixth, the Spartans seized their opportunity. Rudge worked a walk, and Torres was hit by a pitch to bring Thames to the plate. With two outs and a full count, Thames delivered again—this time driving a double off the center field wall to score two runs and give Boardman its first lead of the game at 6–5.

However, Hoover had one final response. A leadoff single in the seventh set the tone, and the runner advanced to third on a passed ball and groundout. A ground ball brought in the tying run, but an error on the play allowed the go-ahead run to reach base. Hoover followed with a single and another error to take a 7–6 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Boardman had one last chance. Sferra led off with a single, but three consecutive flyouts ended the game as the Spartans fell in a hard-fought contest.

For Boardman, Kate Thames led the offense as she had three of the Sparans' six hits and four RBIs on the day. Addie Kowacich pitched in relief of Sferra. She did her part as she went three and two-thirds, struck out four, surrendered six hits, three runs, but zero were earned.

Boardman moves to 9–4 on the season and will look to bounce back Thursday when they host defending Division II state champion Painesville Riverside.

Boardman 5 - Poland 17

The Spartans met the Bulldogs in Poland tonight on a lopsided affair. Poland jumped out to a 4-nothing lead and did not look back. Boardman's defense had trouble locking down Poland's attacking offense which had 24 shots on goal. Catherine Lorenzi did her best to keep up with 7 saves on the night but the Bulldogs were just too much. On the other end of the field, Boardman's offense had trouble controlling the ball which led to many turnovers. When the Spartans did control the ball Lydia Kenney ended up with a hat trick, Ava Gaps added a goal along with Oliva Cuevas. Boardman next plays at home against Akron St V's.

Gaps capitalized on key opportunities to secure the win. The defense fought hard tonight, in helping securing the win. They stayed disciplined and communicated well to keep the pressure on throughout the game. Between the pipes Catherine Lorenzi had 5 saves for tonight’s game. A huge shoutout goes to Anna Bowes, who was a force on the field. She locked down 6 ground balls, consistently winning possession and giving the offense the opportunities they needed to score.
